- scalable window (along with the graph)
- dynamic setting of all colours/scales in the graph (can be changed after the scan and the graph is redrawn), including background and grid colours
- addition of accurate units for blockheads like me ( PIE/ECC or PIE/8ECC, depending on what is being measured/graphed, now it just says 'PIE')

Of course, those are just my wishes

Disk Quality Test (3.16 and 3.21)

Audio-CD (Pressed) - Works
Audio-CD (Recorded) - Don't work

Data CD (Pressed) - Works
Data CD (Recorded)(CD-R) - Don't work
Data CD (Recorded)(CD-RW) - Don't work

These are some strange results. I had never tried pressed CDs before, only CD-Rs.

I've tested with the LiteOn LTR-32123S which uses the same chipset but I could not find any problems.

Thank you for your great tool.

There's indeed a problem with the speed settings with this drive but normally this can be fixed soon.

Notice the PO Failures (they should be 0), high jitter (should stay below 12%) and high number of PI Errors.
This was a 4x DVD+R which was burned at 8x. The scan clearly shows that it should have been burned at 4x.
The first part of the disc which was burned at 6x is good though.

I've made a workaround for the speed issue with the 832S drive. Speed settings for this drive are now hardcoded and not detected anymore.

Thanks for the comments
To add support for Plextor drives (or other drives) permission is needed.
But unfortunately Plextor prefers to have the PI/PO testing function in PlexTools only.

And something else...Is the Pioneer DVR-108 supported?

Regards

Each manufacturer uses its own vendor-specific (= undocumented, Top Secret ) command to return PI/PIF.
So to get the support from a manufacturer they have to give the technical docs as well as the permission to use this command.
I don't know if it would be illegal to use the command if it was retrieved from a different source but it's always a good idea to keep good relations with the drive makers

For all other functions no support/permission is needed because standard commands are used.

Pioneer drives are not yet supported.

CD-DVD Speed doesn't report PO Errors but PI Failures.

Glitches are small bugs from the chipset or firmware which could mess up the end result.

Thanx for the screenshot as well.

What was the point behind the low scanningspeed until now: Firmwarelimitation? Lack of speedup-command? Qualityproblems while highspeedscanning? Or is it a hack (meaning that you do not scan all sectors but only a few)?

Didn't You state earlier in this thread that Benq told you PO-Scanning is not implemented in firmware? Now it looks a little bit like it was implemented.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to blame anyone. It's a great burner. And yours is a great program and it was the first to support pipo-scanning with the Benq at all.

I'm just curious....??

BTW: The scan shown in the screenshot looks not so perfect. High Jitter and PI of 60 at some places. Are You sure drive and disc are ok? Burned 8x right?!

There are several reasons why the current method is slow:
- scan is done at 4x CAV, although this seems to be fixed in the latest firmware version. But it doesn't make much difference.
- PI errors and Jitter cannot be measured in a single pass so everything has to be scanned twice
- the performance when testing with small scanning intervals is low

But these issues are all fixed with the new method.
The results from the screenshot I posted are pretty good. The jitter display is something I'll have to look at because it's much higher than with the old method.

With the old method PI failures were not reported but with the new method all kinds of errors can be reported (including PO errors and PO failures).

It's supported because it uses the Mediatek chipset.

Furthermore, the total CU errors returned after performing digital audio extraction with error reporting by PlexTools are identical, or nearly so, to the C2 totals given by CD Speed. Presumably the results are due to different ways in handling the same raw data, and the C2 in CD Speed for Plextor drive represents E32 , thus corresponds to CU in C1/C2 test of PlexTools , though in different unit of measurement. In its C1/C2 test PlexTools transforms the raw data so as to be compatible with BLER, i. e. in unit of frame/second. CD Speed plots the error rates returned by the chipset as they are, so the unit is byte/second. Am I right? It would be nice to count C1 error rates also in two different ways by the same drive, provided that ErikDeppe will enable support for C1 scanning by Plextor Premium in the near future.

If a drive is not listed here then Nero CD-DVD Speed uses a standard command to get C2 error information. This command returns the errors in bytes/second.
For Plextor drives (not listed) the C2 errors reported by Nero CD-DVD Speed are indeed the same as the CU errors from PlexTools. Both are reported in bytes/second.

Nero CD-DVD Speed shows the errors as they are returned by the drive.
C1/C2 errors are usually returned in frames/second.

Also, it reports jitter for and speed for cd scans that are totally whacked (see attachment): speed jumps from 1x to 99x and jitter is reportedly at 0,3%.

I don't think this drive can report PIFs but I will check these issues asap.

This wonderful unique program allows many drives to perform many tests. Bravo

The Advanced DAE Error test indeed uses the standard MMC command.

The speed is not changed for this test so you can use Nero DriveSpeed to set the speed first.

Normally the results from the Advanced DAE Error test should compare well with the Disc Quality test. Do you have some screenshots which can show the difference?

The test works fine for single layer DVDs but testing dual layer DVDs and CDs is not fully working yet.
But normally a new version should be out by the end of the week.

After asking the questions, I have repeated the tests a few times. The Disc Quality Test at each speed still gave quite reproducible results. Although the reproducibility for the Advanced DAE Error Test became lower, the C2 patterns for the two tests were never the same. I wonder whether this phenomenon is a sign of a failing drive. If so, I am sorry for having wasted your time.

I had tried Drive Speed before, but it could not effectively control the speed in Advanced DAE Error Test by the Liteon writer. The time spent varied from 5 to 50 min. when max speed was chosen. Will you be interested in adding speed selection feature to this test?

I ran some tests but everything look ok here.
Perhaps you can try the latest firmware?

But the Disc Quality test will give you a more detailed view of the quality (Extra -> Disc Quality).

btw. the first screenshot shows that your drive is not using Ultra DMA which is needed to read at >10x.

Looks like the upcoming Optorite (DD1603) might also be based on the Sanyo chipset.

At least UM Doctor Pro can show both C1/C2 and PI/PIF on those Optorite burners.

It would be a very welcome addition, if you feel it's worth the effort and possible to do.

Thanks again for continuing the development of CD Dvd Speed!

Re: CDSpeed v3 Disc Quality Test

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new version is being tested and normally it should be released later today.
That's the good news
The bad news is that the enhanced scanning function for BenQ recorders only works with the

8x burners at the moment.
For the 16x burners a new firmware or a new version of Nero CD-DVD Speed (or both) is

needed.

Here is a screenshot of a CD test:

So even though the errors are up to 3000x higher the graphs and scores are similar.
The colored bars on the background are an indication of the acceptable number of errors. For

a good scan the PIFs should stay in the green area.
For LiteOn DVD burners this limit is set to 4 PIFs.

2)
Advanced CD jitter test (only for certain AOpen combo drives and CD-RW recorders)

3)
The Create Data Disc function can now write the test results to the disc.
So then you will always know which drive/firmware/speed was used to burn the disc
The Disc Quality test can use this information:

I like the idea of marking an "in the green" area for PIF-counts as long as you don't change

the values actually reported. From your samples, this seems to be for PIF only (the colour

is hard to distinguish on my monitor- I'll have to try the new version myself. )

Storing "Create Data Disc" information on the disc itself is also a super idea, like your

sample shows! Thank you!

With the increasing information you're making available, I'd like to repeat halcyon's

request for labels on the axes (I'm a physicist and would like to see units on everything

too). If there is a problem finding room for this information, adding a colour-code to the

axes would do the trick.

What does the RH scale on the lower plots for the LiteOn and Asus drive refer to? (It's

missing on the AOpen plot.)

G

Thanks for the comments

The test only shows the colored bars for PIFs and also the quality score only considers

PIFs. According to my tests it's almost impossible to use the PI errors for calibration

because the differences are too high.

I've increased the brigtness of the colored bars a bit so they should be more visible

The RH scale is used for jitter (in %) but it should not appear if the drive can't report

jitter. I have fixed this.

I will try to add the labels to the axes with the next version.

The Aopen 1648/AAP might become interesting for quality testing after all. If we can compare

quality scores in a easy and convenient way, CD-DVD Speed might become the standard of

quality testing for us normal consumers, since testing would not be limited to a certain

brand of drives.

The comparable graphs and scores may also convince certain manufacturers to give their

support for the Disc Quality test.
Some of them are worried that people will think the scanning function of their drives is not

accurate because it shows more errors than LiteOn scans.
I hope this version can convince them to support PI/PO testing

Scanning a single layer works perfectly with the benq.

Do you've had that problem with a DW822?

Kind regards,

Gerd

This should not be a problem with the new version anymore

Speed: The speed is increased to a max. of 3.7 (start about 1.4) here which is good, but you've got a max of 8 with the same drive? Any clues?

Kind regards,

Gerd

PS: As you can see in my picture of the FOCUS error the german word "Durchschnitt" is always missing the last "t".

Thanks for letting me know. I will fix this in the next version.

If you set the speed to 8x (not maximum) then you should be able to scan at 8x.

I know there aren't any units on the graphs yet, but I don't think 48 723 PIF is possible in any reasonable scanning interval.

For PIF, I think the maximum for 32 ECC blocks summed is 208 (PI rows / ECC block) x 32 (ECC blocks) = 6 656 erroneus PI rows (=PIF).

POE could be up to that high. Based on how calculated and implemented, I think POE could be as high as 6656 * 167 = 1 111 5552 for each 32 ECC block summed window (if I understand the DVD spec right).

I think all of this would make more sense to my little brain, if common units were labelled and graphed on the charts (please, pretty please ).

I know the point is not to get absolute numbers. However, when graphing known unit measures we could at least check if the drives are actually reporting figures that are even theoretically possible, or if they are just misbehaving and reporting 'whatever'.

cheers,
halcyon

I've checked it and the second graph indeed shows PO errors instead of PI failures.
Also the unit of measurement is in bytes and not columns.
There are a lot of bytes in 64 ECC blocks

I know that you set BTC's green background at 4 PIF rating, yellow at 10(?), and 10+ is red, same as what I saw for my LiteOn. However, you will notice that BTC is showing much much higher values in both PI and PIF , eventhough both drive have the same MTK chip.

If possible, could you ask BTC (or if you already) what the ratio suppose to be for the BTC drives in order to get comparable quality and graph? Also you notice the background is not showing red on BTC's picture, I think the red background stop showing from certain PIF value, but I don't know the exact PIF where the red background stopped showing up.

Thank you for your work. This is a really useful free program.

I think the BTC drives use a scanning interval of 42 ECC blocks (LiteOn drives use an interval of 1 ECC block) which would explain the big difference.
I will check with BTC.

I will also try to find out what's going on with the red background.

I'm running a LiteOn SOHW-1213S@1633S (BS0H) and have deactivated auto-bitsetting in case this makes a difference. Both KProbe2 and Nero (6.3.1.15) show disc and book type as DVD+RW. This is independent of doing a prior full or quick erase.

As far as I can tell, this behaviour was already present in v3.30 but not in v.3.10.

Any suggestions?

G

Can you please tell me if you erased the disc and which program you used for that?
I've seen this behaviour with DVD+RW discs which were erased with InCD.
If you erase the disc with Nero CD-DVD Speed (Extra->Erase Disc) then it should work fine.

I have a large tower with 12 optical DVD drives in it and CD/DVD speed will only report 9 drives maximum so the BenQ drive and 2 others do not appear in the drop down list. All these drives are on PCI IDE controllers except for the BenQ & a Liteon DVD-ROM which are connected to the internal IDE and they all function correctly with my burning softwares as well as DVDInfoPro.
A workaround for this is for me to disable one of my controllers and reboot the system so I have only 8 drives present & then the CD/DVD Speed will then see the missing drives. As you can imagine this is inconvenient because I then need a reboot to re-enable the missing drives and the drive letters have changed from the ones I had originally assigned them together with their scsi ID which usually means a regedit to set them back to how I like them
Please can you look into this and fix the software so that it will recognise more than 9 optical drives in the one PC.
NB. This problem has not just developed with the latest version it was apparent with earlier versions but this time I decided to report it to you.

Thanks for letting me know.
Nero CD-DVD Speed supports up to 128 drives.
However it only checks the first 8 controllers. Do you have more than 8 controllers?
