Sony raising curtain on 'holy grail' of d-cinema
By Sheigh Crabtree -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Digital cinema chip technologies and their various merits and weaknesses will be subjected to a long, hard look at the Digital Cinema Laboratory in Hollywood this week. Sony plans to debut a prototype d-cinema projector at the Lab on Thursday that the manufacturer promises will more than double the image quality of the highest-resolution d-cinema images to date. Thanks to Texas Instruments' DLP Cinema technology, 2K digital projection is, today, a de facto industry standard -- albeit a starting point for scalable 2K-4K digital cinema. But TI's DLP chip could fade to the background if Sony's SXRD chip technology lives up to its promise. Sony executives have already begun touting the SXRD chip as the "holy grail" of d-cinema because of its ability to project 4K images (4096x2160). If that promise comes to fruition, it could be tough times for TI's DLP Cinema because 4K represents more than double the resolution of TI's digital mirror device, which projects 2048x1080 imagery. It is quite likely that image quality comparisons between TI's 2K chip and Sony's 4K chip will involve much more than just pixel count and resolution. Sony's SXRD chip is based on silicon crystal reflective display technology. It shares the same root technology as JVC's D-ILA chip made from liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS). In prior Lab tests, the JVC LCOS chip has struggled with issues of color stability and overheating. However, Tom Mykietyn, director of content creation for Sony Electronics' broadcast and production systems division, notes that the SXRD has undergone "some improvements and enhancements" beyond standard LCOS technology at Sony's Atsugi Technology Center in Japan. When comparing SXRD and LCOS technology, Mykietyn notes that the key difference is SXRD's "narrower pitch," "thinner gap" and "fine pixel pitch, which enables the reproduction of smooth images, especially for slanting lines." In fact, the Atsugi engineers behind these improvements will be on hand at the Lab when Sony unveils its 10,000 lumens SXRD prototype projector Thursday. They will sit alongside industry executives and view a 15- to 20-minute demonstration of Digital Cinema Initiatives' StEm (standard test evaluation material) sourced at both 2K and 4K resolution. "We're confident that with our 4K projector, feeding 2K source material through it, you'll even see an improvement in the 2K signal," says Andrew Stucker, general manager of digital production systems. Sony also will show a four- to five-minute reel prepared in-house that contains 65mm film and scenes acquired in 24p RGB digital. "65mm is not as widely used as 35mm, but it is well in the mix," Stucker says. "And digital production has found some space in the content creation industry out here, so we wanted to show what that looked like as well." Trailers from current releases also are on tap and will be followed by a question-and-answer session. What does Sony hope will be the best outcome from the 4K projection demonstration? "A standing ovation," Stucker jokes. "But seriously, the best outcome is critical input. We have really made a conscious effort to bring Sony engineers from the factory literally right to the community to listen to the voice of the customer so they can get feedback directly. And then we'll try our darnedest to live up to their expectations." Neither Mykietyn nor Stucker would cite a price range for the SXRD projector, saying only that it would be "very competitively priced." But both note that Sony has no plans to license SXRD chip technology to third-party projection vendors. However, Mykietyn is confident that Sony is capable of maintaining any future digital cinema projectors in exhibition venues worldwide. "Servicing our projectors in the field, whether they're video projectors or news-based systems or high-end systems -- that's nothing new for Sony," he notes. Texas Instruments is hosting a 2K digital cinema demonstration and discussion on the heels of Sony's 4K projector debut at the Lab on Friday. The company will show clips from DreamWorks' "Shrek 2" and 20th Century Fox's "The Day After Tomorrow." |
