Lite-On IT to produce 18x DVD writers in July, 20x in 4th Q.

Back in the days of CD writers, some probably recall manufacturers trying to introduce faster CD writers just when most thought 40x was going to be the limit. Eventually they stopped at 52x despite some rumours at the time that 56x was going to be the limit. Well, with pretty much all DVD writer manufacturers already offering 16x speed writers, according to a DigitTimes report, Lite-On IT will begin volume production of 18x DVD burners in July, followed by the production of 20x models in the 4th quarter.

With intense competition between competing brands of 16x writers, Lite-On aims to improve its overall gross margins with these upcoming more profitable 18x and 20 writers. Lite-On IT also announced that they will start volume production of Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD optical drives in August, however until the manufacturing costs of these new technologies come down, Lite-On will remain focused on DVD writers for the next two years. Lite-On IT will begin volume production of 18x DVD burners in July and plans to start production of 20x DVD burners in the fourth quarter of this year, according to Michael Gong, the company's Optical Disc Drive Business general manager, at a press conference following the company's 2006 shareholders meeting on June 15.

As OEM prices of 16x DVD burners drop further due to intense competition, the switch to production of more profitable 18x and 20x DVD burners is aimed at keeping overall gross margins from falling, Gong indicated.

With very little difference between the time it takes to write a disc at 12x and 16x DVD with some DVD writers, it will be interesting to see if Lite-On’s upcoming 20x DVD writer could improve the time by much. For the average consumer, an improvement of something like 30 seconds or so is not really going to matter like the difference between a 40x and 48x writer, but for professionals who need to replicate 100’s of discs such as for handing out brochures or other samples on DVD, a difference of 30 seconds could mean a time saving of an hour for every 120 discs.

18x DVD±R表現成績挺亮眼。

重點是 什麼時候要SATA介面阿...............

宣示義意大於實質義意吧.... 像小弟我 12x 幾乎沒用超過五次.... 16x 更別說是連想都沒想過....
現再來個 18x .... 快個幾秒鐘.... 實在沒有吸引人去買的動機...

還不如繼續買 1640 用的應該會比較高興... 呵呵!! 不過科技也就是這樣....
玩來玩去... 最後還是逃脫不了在數字上面玩遊戲...
