八十七年前，我們的先輩在這大陸上建立了一個新的國家。這個國家是基於一個擁有自由的構思，同時又是奉獻給如下的定理：每個人天生下來都是平等的。我們現在正投身於一場巨大的內戰中，為的是要考驗這個國家，或任何有同樣構思與奉獻的國家，能否持久地存在。

　　我們今天在這內戰的廣大戰場上相聚，要獻出其中一部分土地，給那些為這個國家的長存而付出了生命的人，作為他們最後的安息之所。這樣做是適當而又應該的。但在較大的意義上說，我們實在不能獻出----不能奉獻----這個場所，也不能把它作為聖地。那些勇敢的人，或生或死，曾經在這裡奮戰；而他們已作出的奉獻，實在遠遠地超過我們微不足道的能力所能增加或減少的。

　　這個世界對我們今天在這裡所說的話，不會特別留意，也不會長久記住，但那些勇敢的人在這裡做過的事，世界將永遠不會遺忘。我們生存者應該做的，是繼續他們尚未完成的工作，雖然他們的奮戰已取得輝煌的成績。

　　我們今天在這裡相聚，不為其他，而是要表達我們要對他們所遺留下來的偉大事業作出奉獻----在值得我們尊敬的死者身上，我們要加重自己的使命感，從而達到他們毫無保留的奉獻之目的----我們於是站起來表決，這些死者將不會是白白犧牲的----這個國家，在上帝之下，將會有一個新生的自由----這個屬於人民的政府，由人民管理的政府，為人民而設的政府，將永遠不會在地球上滅亡的。

Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.

It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate -- we cannot consecrate -- we cannot hallow -- this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
