A few details have slowly emerged about the big 20th anniversary E.T. The Extraterrestrial re-release next March.

According to Kathleen Kennedy, Spielberg's longtime producer and friend, Spielberg has been working on a newly enhanced print of E.T. for release early next spring. "For one thing, E.T. says 'Phone Home' much better and Steven has added nearly 10 minutes of new bits and pieces footage. There is no one huge extended scene, just little moments cut from various scenes," says Kennedy.

In a recent New York Times interview, the director himself acknowledged that one of the film's best additions is a new DTS Surround re-master.

Kennedy insists Spielberg is not trying to set any box-office records for E.T. by having a new theatrical release. "It's not about money. It's about introducing E.T. to a fourth generation of kids in a movie theater where they should see it for maximum effect."

And just in case you're still holding on to 20-year-old rumors of a "Blue Planet" sequel, Kennedy squashes them once and for all. "We never intended E.T. to be a franchise movie. (Steven) was eager to see sequels to Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park because that was always an option. Those films were made with the same thinking as the Star Wars and Bond films. Before we even began shooting (E.T.), Steven was adamant he'd never allow a sequel. The movie stands on its own."
