We all know that regional coding is a lousy idea in this increasingly globalised world of the Internet. The studios are losing their grip on this issue. But we also know that they will not let go without a fight.
Some far-sighted programmers have long anticipated such an assault. As early as Summer 2000, copies of simulated-RCE discs were already making their rounds, in CD-R format, among the Multi-Region elites.
Nevertheless, the "leak" of an internal Warner memo in early October 2000 and its subsequent development caused quite a stir in the newsgroups. The biggest surprise with the whole RCE affair however, is the actual lack of ammunition instead of a stunning body count.
All eyes on this Region 1 title...
What is RCE?
A little program or script designed by the studios to stop upgraded DVD players from a particular Region from playing titles from other Regions.
Multi-Region vs Code-Free/Region 0
True Multi-Region Upgrades (auto or manual) cope with discs from different regions by providing the correct coded region on the player. The upgrade process is relatively sophisticated. Micro-processors like E-Mod or Enterprise Multimod are needed.
Code-Free/Region 0 is not region specific. The upgrade process is normally relatively simple. Usually done by adding a capacitor, bridging some joints or keying in a series of digits via the remote control.
RCE titles
Only the Region 1 version of The Patriot is known to have RCE embedded.
No doubt there will be more to come.
How effective is RCE?
Until a thorough test is completed, we cannot give a definitive answer.
Initial tests suggest that it effects only a small fraction of upgraded players.
It is almost certain that all players with Manual and Auto/Manual regional code switching will be OK.
All Code-Free/Region 0 models are expected to be affected.
Most remote handset hacks are expected to face problems.
We will provide a full list of effected players as soon as our tests are concluded.
The implications and how it affects you
It is unlikely that the Studios will back track from this aggressive position.
If your player is affected, you may try to get an RCE upgrade if available.
The RCE problem will not go away on its own. It may only be on 1 or 2 titles now, but a whole catalogue is expected in the future.
Techtronics will provide a comprehensive RCE upgrade depending on an evaluation of the overall situation. Details will be announced here when a thorough investigation is completed.
Do not panic. There is no rush. Wait until the dust has truly settled before considering your options.
Some advice for new buyers
Hollywood studios' regional coding dilemma will stay, one way or the other. Regional restriction will continue, regardless of how big the loophole is in comparison to the ozone. To please their regional licencees, RCE-like attempts will always be on their agenda.
Multi-Region DVD players will remain the most controversial item in your home cinema setup. Your best guarantee is to stick with an expert Multi-Region company, with in-house programmers, who have extensive experience of this issue.
The weaknessess of cheap or free upgrades such as handset hacks have been exposed by the RCE scare. You should avoid them if possible, because in the end, you may be paying more to get it fix.
Never try to obtain a 100% future-proof Multi-Region-for-ever-ever guarantee from a dealer. Such a guarantee is worthless, only ignorant high street chains, mail order crooks or inexperienced retailers are inclined to comply.
Crystal ball
Can the studios pull out a more devastating punch in the next round?
We don't think so, but we will welcome the challenge!
Remember: NOT ALL UPGRADE SOLUTIONS ARE EQUAL
