People in the know say that Episode 1 is scheduled for DVD release at the end of 2001, presumably for Christmas season. Carl from DVD Sewer also chimes in with this to say:
I just stumbled onto your report on the DVD research calls. Interesting stuff. I'm not disputing whether the report is legit (because I do know that such calls occur) but I wouldn't really believe that it indicates that "Indy" and "The Godfather" are headed to DVD this year.
In fact, if they did it would be contrary to what I was personally told by Paramount's Martin Blythe (who heads up their DVD department) while visiting Paramount and attending Studio Day with the Home Theater Forum in Los Angeles last Fall. Now, things can always change quickly with DVD (and this was in November) but Martin told us that "Indy" DVDs were "coming", but "not in 2001". He said much the same thing about "The Godfather" on DVDs, but that there was "a chance" we'd see them before 2002. Really, none of this is solid because these markets and legal issues can change drastically without warning. But I did hear this stuff straight from the source. If "Indy" was announced on DVD tomorrow for a Fall 2001 release, it wouldn't surprise me. Conversely, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see it until 2002 or 2003. As for "Star Wars", we still hear that "Episode I" on DVD is "quite possible" for Christmas of THIS year... but who knows?
Lucasfilm is completely mum about the issue, and they have final say. One thing is for certain: After talking to execs from both Fox and Paramount they are MORE than anxious to see our two favorite trilogies on DVD as soon as possible. When Lucasfilm is ready on their end, we'll have them... plain and simple.
