FINAL FANTASY DVD already in the works
While the all-CG film has yet to hit theaters, Square Pictures is hard at work on the "mother" of all DVDs
With Square Pictures’ FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN poised to set the world of CG animation ablaze on July 11, 2001, the gaming company turned movie studio has already shifted its focus toward the feature’s eventual DVD release. So much so, in fact, that it has spent the past five months working on the disc’s rather unique offerings.
One-of-a-kind in its use of virtual actors, sets, props, etc. in a near photo-realistic style (or as Square likes to refer to it, “hyper-real”), the film’s distinctive digital format allows for DVD extras the likes of which are impossible to achieve with a more traditionally shot film. Don’t expect to see these extras right away, however. A staggered release schedule will see two DVDs in stores, each with its own set of offerings.
“For the first release, it will be a straight DVD with a lot of added value stuff,” says FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRITS WITHIN co-producer Jun Aida. “[However, the material will] only be a viewable [version], so it [won’t] have the interactive features. But by spring of next year, we’re going to have a PlayStation 2 version – it’s only playable on a PlayStation 2. It will have interactive capabilities where you can change the camera angles and the lighting to make your own director’s cut of the movie.”
While this “ultimate” edition DVD pays homage to the game system that made the franchise such a huge success (the FINAL FANTASY video game series has sold over 38 million units worldwide since its partnership with Sony PlayStation), co-producer Chris Lee argues the decision to go with PlayStation 2 only is purely one of logistics.
“[It will just be on the PlayStation 2] mainly because your regular DVD doesn’t have all the controls for the camera angles and stuff like that,” says Lee

PS2-specific DVD of Final Fantasy film planned
Square Pictures is planning an interactive DVD of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.
During a recent roundtable discussion, Jun Aida, producer of the upcoming Square Pictures' film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, revealed that the company currently plans to release two DVD versions of the movie. One will be released as a regular DVD product, while the second will be released specifically for the Sony PlayStation 2. The company currently plans to add specific elements of interactivity to the PS2 DVD of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, like the ability to manipulate the camera in certain scenes.
"There will be two different sets of products," Aida explained. "For the PS2 DVD release, we will do some scenes using real-time rendering, where you will have the interactive ability to change the camera angles. So, you can sort of have your own version of the film, with your own camera positions."

而在電影版DVD光碟方面也推出兩種版本，一種是普通的DVD版本，另一種則是專門對應PS2的特別版DVD電影光碟。根據製作公司表示，PS2版的特別DVD中也設計了部份場景中可由玩家自行改變鏡頭角度，而這些都有賴PS2的即時演算功能，有別於一般普通的電影DVD，增加了互動的元素讓PS2玩家體驗全然不同的電影經驗。
這兩種版本的電影DVD光碟預定上市時間在2002年春季，玩家們可以先到電影院中體驗一下這部電影的驚人魅力。
