Oscar-winning 'Gladiator' producer Doug Wick has confirmed to Popcorn that talks are underway to make a prequel to the swords 'n' sandals epic.
Starring Russell Crowe, 'Gladiator' became the big success of 2000, raking in $452m worldwide and cleaning up at this year's Oscars.
Wick tells Popcorn that the possibility of making a prequel is "certainly something being discussed, but there's been no decision made. We're looking at lots of options."
Given the amount of money the film took, it isn't surprising that everyone's seeing dollar signs. However, Wick claims that money will not be the motivation on any 'Gladiator' follow-up.
"You don't finally do something like that unless you have a dazzling story to tell. What we certainly won't do is some shadow of the first one to grind out a few bucks."
There's also the small question of the star. Whether Russell Crowe would be willing to return is an issue that's unlikely to be resolved until a decision is made on whether to make the film at all, but would Wick consider going for it even if Crowe turned it down? He says: "We'd have to think very seriously about that, [Russell has] a lot of voltage on screen."
