Justin Meldal-Johnsen: electric and upright bass
Those of you who are familiar with the works of Beck know already that you can expect a high songwriter craftmanship from this talented young musician. And they won't be disappointed in Sea Change.
There's no fooling around on this album. Totally basic and cut back, it's a true singer/songwriter album, waaay laid back and always with a slight melancholic touch, reinforced by lots of string arrangements and slide guitar. The name fits perfect, the music feels like an Ocean; huge and relaxing but at the same time kind of sad.
On bass is, as usual, Beck's long-term musical companion Justin Meldal-Johnsen (see also our interview in the August issue). But you'll find no flashy soloing from any of the musicians, no show-off tunes on this brilliant album, just pure songs. The very few more powerful tunes strongly remind one of Curt Cobain's sad and desperate chords and choirs.
