"Skiis Against the Bomb
National Geographic's Skis Against The Bomb is a remarkable story of sabotage, endurance, and intrigue surrounding a few Norwegian resistance fighters' attempts to prevent the Germans from developing an atomic bomb. With over 400,000 German troops in Norway by 1940, German scientists had the potential to an atomic bomb using the heavy water supply generated from the Norsk hydroelectric plant nestled high above the small town of Rjukan in Norway. The plant, perched halfway up the side of a steep and narrow gorge was patrolled 24 hours a day by Nazi guards. The one entrance- a small suspension bridge- was impossible to use for access. The only other way in would mean climbing down into an incredibly steep gorge covered with snow and ice, crossing the river, and then climbing up the other side. Chosen because they had grown up in and around the town of Rjukan, the advance team would launch three incredible attacks in their efforts to destroy the Nazi's heavy water supply. The bravery and skill of the Norwegian resistance fighters helped prevent the Nazi's from developing the dreaded atomic bomb and perhaps forever changed the course of human events. "
