2001年推出的作業系統—Windows XP，是官方首次不再按照慣例以年份數位為產品命名。XP 是Experience（體驗）的縮寫，Microsoft 公司希望這款作業系統能夠在全新技術和功能的引導下，給Windows 的廣大用戶帶來全新的作業系統體驗。如今，Windows XP已經成為中小企業級用戶和個人用戶的主流作業系統。
預計在2006年正式發佈的代碼名稱為Longhorn的Windows作業系統更是被微軟公司寄予厚望，它的強大的安全性和桌面應用技巧、互動操作能力都被微軟定義為劃時代的作品，微軟希望能借此開啟Windows時代新篇章。
7月26日，也是Windows 95十周年的日子。Windows 95是微軟奠定作業系統勝局，開創全球Windows時代的大作品。也就在這個日子裏，微軟計畫召開Longhorn（Windows Vista）第一個測試版本的發佈會，微軟CEO巴爾默已經對媒體表示，Longhorn發佈會的盛況，在歷史上將會僅次於Windows 95。
Windows Vista，這是繼Windows XP之後微軟迎來的新的Windows“娃娃”。

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Microsoft announced Friday that it will call its next-generation operating system "Windows Vista."
The much-anticipated operating system had formerly been code-named "Longhorn."
