有人比較過,若IOWA跟大和互轟,IOWA會贏
從裝甲與艦炮來看,大和只有在中近程有優勢,IOWA在中長程砲戰有優勢
IOWA擁有當時先進的雷達射控,相對於大和的光學瞄準有絕對的優勢,加上美國較好的冶金技術,16/50砲的性能與大和的18/45砲不相上下,甚至在遠距離有著精準度的優勢
IOWA的裝甲採用ALL-or NONE配置,只有在重要的地方像是砲塔,火藥庫與艦橋有當時來說超厚的裝甲,其他地方則普普,大和則是平均分攤.
在遠距離砲戰上面,砲彈常常是由上而下以接近垂直的角度打擊船體,將裝甲平均攤在兩側並沒有意義,於是提出ALL-or-none配置,只保護最重要的部位,在這種情況下砲彈會被超厚的裝甲檔下,或是直接穿過去在水中或是不重要的地方爆炸,對戰力並不會造成立即的影響
平均分攤的配置則主要是為了防禦接近砲戰時的高爆彈,對長程砲戰用的穿甲彈的防禦力幾近是零
於是IOWA大可結合雷達射控的長程搜索能立與遠距離精準度,在最大射程慢慢玩死大和,或是發現苗頭不對馬上落跑...
