The LITE-ON writes as DVD+R and you cannot change it to DVD-ROM.
Lite-on has indicated they will not make any changes to the firmware to make book-type changes posiible in the future. The suggestion to write DVD+R as DVD-ROM by default to increase compatibility with older stand-alone players was rejected by them.
In my experience the reliability of the lite-on is far from good. I have had a fail-rate of about 15%. If you want the ability to change the bitsettings to dvd-rom you should opt for a ricoh-based writer like f.i. the aopen 2412pro.
