Widescreen Review:
Picture Quality: 3 (5 is the highest rating)
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a stylized picture, with colors that are often exaggerated, with vibrant reds and greens that pop from the screen. Other times, the picture is muted, with more refined, balanced hues. Images are often sharp and revealing of fine detail, while other scenes are smeared and wanting in definition. Edge enhancement is occasionally noticed, but is not too much of a distraction. Source element artifacts are apparent, and film grain sometimes seems excessive.


Sound Quality: 3 (5 is the highest rating)
This soundtrack is part of a recent string of Disney/Miramax DVD offerings in which the Dolby(r) Digital audio has been coded at the lower 384kbps rate. The 5.1-channel soundfield has a substantial balance toward the screen and is dialogue-centric. The sonic image across the screen is amply satisfying, but the paucity of surround envelopment can't be ignored. The tonal balance sometimes errs slightly on the bright side. The production of the dialogue leaves something to be desired, with voices sounding detached from the environments as suggested by the visuals, as well as being a bit forward-sounding. The music is basically a front-channel listening experience with limited expansiveness.
