Story:
1931, United States, Mid-West Area. Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), married with two kids, is a hitman working for his foster father John Rooney (Paul Newman), a small time gangster-boss of a small town. Through no fault of his own but rather due to his foster-brother Connor's (Daniel Craig) incompetency, Sullivan is involved in the murder of three workers in Rooney's company. Just as the two try to find a solution to this potentially disastrous problem, they discover that Sullivan's oldest son, Michael (Tyler Hoechlin), witnessed the incident. Sullivan promises Rooney and Connor that Michael will not speak about this to anyone. Nevertheless, Connor tries to have Sullivan killed, who, summarily, manages to escape this attempt. However, he is not as successful in trying to save his wife Anne(Jennifer Jason Leigh) or his younger son Peter (Liam Aiken) from being killed by Connor - Michael escapes the massacre. Desperate to take revenge for the killings, Sullivan drives with Michael to Chicago to see Al Capone's second hand man Frank Nitti (Stanley Tucci), and offers the Capone organisation his services if they let him kill Connor. Nitti refuses, which leads Sullivan to start a war against the organisation, burning down their liquer factories and stealing their money from their bank accounts, while, at the same time, still trying to get to Connor, who is being protected by Nitti. As Sullivan and Michael's operations scar Capone deeper and deeper, Nitti hires Maguire (Jude Law), a merciless and ruthless killer, to execute the two living Sullivans.
