Jackie Chan Turning to Drama?

Variety reports that Jackie Chan wants to be a dramatic actor, not just an action star, and Steven Spielberg is going to help him do it.

"I don't like people always talking about Jackie Chan the action star. I want to be an actor. An actor has a life that goes on forever," Chan told reporters in a weekend interview to promote his new comedy/action movie, "Rush Hour 2".

Chan said he is set to begin shooting on Sept. 10 a film called "Tuxedo" which Steven Spielberg. In the movie, Chan said he plays a cab driver sent to the home of a wealthy man who has slipped into a coma and been hospitalized. Chan's cab driver is there retrieving personal items, but he can't resist slipping on the man's tuxedo.

That's the set-up, but the cagey Chan declined to provide further details, saying he wasn't supposed to talk about the film, which is common practice before a release. Chan did say "Tuxedo" will include some action, mostly drama, and a lot of special effects.

Tuxedo: The Toronto Sun reports that Jackie Chan will head to Toronto to shoot this Steven Spielberg-produced drama from September 1st through till next February (production actually kicks off August 3rd). Whilst it will contain martial arts action, the Dreamworks film "will emphasize drama" whilst Chan isn't allowed to reveal many details - this is all he could say: "I'm a truck driver. I help somebody and he was a spy and he is in a coma in a hospital. I go back to his house to help him, to take him a toothbrush and underwear, and then I find a tuxedo and then the story begins". Chan is also interested in breaking the mold he's now in: "More acting and more drama. Because I don't want to be an action star. Because an action star, the life's so short. I want my life to get longer. I want to get my career longer". Kevin Donovan will direct the film, whilst Chan is scheduled to do "The Highbinders" both this Summer and during the 10-day Christmas break from the "Tuxedo" shoot.
