Dear all,

I got this 1080i hack for 963 from a friend, and tested it on my Philips plasma. I've also tested it on a friend's Barco 7 CRT projector. It works in both cases w/o a hitch. No disabling of PAL p-scan or all-code whatever.

Because of the slightly >1MB file size, I have to span it into 2 parts. I'll be sending out part 1. I strongly advise you to delete this part after downloading to your HDD so as to free up space in your mail box for the 2nd part which I will send out this evening/tomorrow morning.

Procedures:-

1. download parts 1 and 2 of the zipped hack file
2. unzip onto HDD (you should see 2 files - 09980001.015 and download.04c)
3. burn the 2 files onto a decent CD-RW/CD-R (my friend wasn't able to get a stable 1080i output initially because the CD-RW was corrupted (the output keeps jumping back to 480p); I had to clone another CD-RW for him to make it work
4. put it in your 963
5. look at the display and make sure that you don't see any error message (if you see an error, clone another CD)
6. the upgrade process should take 1-2 mins.
7. go to the menu and select 1080i output and enjoy
8. feel free to distribute the hack to your friends if it works
9. report any problems encountered
10. report picture quality if you're using a traditional CRT TV or LCD/DLP projector

Warning:-

1. Pls. check your display's manual on whether your display can take 1080i input before enabling 1080i.
2. Burn a copy of the original/latest firmware onto another CD-R just in case the hack should be unsuccessful.

Disclaimer:-

Whilst I've tested the hack on two 963s with 2 displays, I cannot gurantee that the hack will work with your 963/display (particularly if you have the EU/US versions). I will not be responsible for any damage arising from the use/misuse of this firmware hack which is provided for free.

Picture Quality:-

In a word, marvellous, particularly in 16:9 mode. The picture even brightens up on Barco 7 when we flipped from 480p and 1080i. I didn't notice any artifact with The Fifth Element. 1080i is better than 480p on both plasma/projector. At first, I thought that plasmas will not be affected since it will re-scale all inputs to 852 x 480, but I was wrong. A friend commented that this could be due to averaging out of A-D conversion noise with more pixels (1920 x 1080) to down-convert from. I'm not an electronic engineer, so don't ask me to explain. See for yourself.

A word on 4:3 mode, I noticed a little artifacts with Santana's Supernatural DVD on Barco 7 but not my plasma. I suggest you switch back to 480p if you see the same with your display.

If you want to upgrade your firmware, grap a cd-r disc and burn the
firmware to it. Pay attention: The cd-r disc has to be written in a
certain way. That is: Use mode 2 cdrom-XA iso9660 to burn a data cd
with the two files contained in the zip file. There have to be two
files in the root of the cd-r disc. Do not include the readme file.
After burning the cd-r disc, check, with a little help of you cd-rom
player and your computer, if it's readable to harddisk. If this
works, your cd-r disc should also be readable by your DVD player.

How do I flash my DVD player in the right way? (Please, read all the
points before you really start flashing).

Turn on your DVD player and wait until its initialization completes.
The display shows "no disc".
Open the drawer and insert the cd-r disc containing the firmware.
Press 'close'. Do not press 'play'.
The firmware will load automatically. After 1 or 2 minutes the
updating is complete.
After completing, the drawer will open automatically.
Remove the cd-r disc. Do not press 'close', but gently push the
drawer. Wait untill 'no disc' appears and press the power off
button.
Turn on the DVD player, the updating is completed.
